Smoke flavourings to be banned in the EU
European Union
Nov 27, 2023
The European Commission is proposing to withdraw eight smoke flavourings from the EU market "as soon as possible" and, if member states agree, the measure could be in force as early as 2024.
The proposal follows the publication in November 2023 of the EFSA scientific advice on the safety of the concerned smoke flavourings, the authorisation of which was due for renewal. Based on the available scientific evidence, experts could not rule out concerns regarding genotoxicity for any of the eight smoke flavourings analyzed.
Smoke flavourings are regulated separately from other flavourings in the EU as they consist of complex mixtures of substances, which give rise to different safety issues.
