Stearyl tartrate (E 483) removed from authorized additives

European Union

Oct 06, 2023

With Implementing Regulation (EU) 2023/2379 of 29 September 2023, the Commission has removed stearyl tartrate (E 483) from the Union list of approved food additives

The decision follows the EFSA scientific opinion on stearyl tartrate, which could not confirm the safety of the substance as a food additive and its acceptable daily intake (ADI), due to a lack of adequate toxicological data, as well as adequate data that could allow read-across from data on other substances.

Foods containing stearyl tartrate (E 483) that have been lawfully placed on the market before 23 April 2024 may continue to be marketed until their date of minimum durability or ‘use-by date’.
