Future amendments for glycerol (422) specifications proposed

In March 2023, the European Commission published a draft Commission Regulation amending Regulation No 231/2012 as regards specification for glycerol (E 422). Following the Scientific Opinion of EFSA from 18 May 2022, the European Commission proposed the following:
- Amending the definition of glycerol to restrict it to manufacturing processes, which were assessed by EFSA,
- Reducing the maximum limits for toxic elements, and
- Including a maximum numerical limit for acrolein.
As no immediate health concern was identified, foods containing glycerol, which were that has been lawfully placed on the market, may continue to be placed on the market during a transitional period and to remain on the market until their expiration date.
