Modification to the list of permitted food additives
Canada
Oct 20, 2022
Health Canada's Food Directorate completed a premarket safety assessment of two food additive submissions that together sought approval for the joint use of calcium lactate and sodium alginate in to manufacture whisky-based cocktails encapsulated in calcium alginate membrane-bound spheres.
Calcium lactate and sodium alginate are already permitted foods additives in Canada.
The results of the premarket assessment support the safety of calcium lactate and sodium alginate for manufacturing calcium alginate membrane-bound spheres of whisky-based cocktails and other unstandardized alcoholic beverages. Consequently, Health Canada has extended the use of calcium lactate and sodium alginate described in the information document below by modifying the List of Permitted Food Additives with Other Accepted Uses, effective October 21, 2022.
