India - Elimination of industrial Trans Fatty Acids from the food supply chain: With a focus on India
India
Sep 26, 2024
According to the Indian "Food Safety and Standards (Packaging and Labeling) Regulations, 2011", food products (using fats, oils, and fat emulsions as an ingredient), and every package of oil (edible oils, inter-esterified vegetable fat, margarine, both PHVO or hydrogenated), edible fats, and fat spreads (vegetable fat spread as well as mixed fat spread), and TFA composition must be disclosed on the label (Asif, 2011). If there is less than one gram of Trans Fat per 100 gs or 100 ml of edible fats or oils, the claim "Trans-fat free" may be used for oils. Also, restaurants are permitted to display the "Trans-fat free" emblem in their venues and on their food items if they utilise trans-fat-free oils and fats and do not exceed 0.2 g of industrial trans-fat per 100 g of food (Drewnowski & Fulgoni III, 2008). Use of the aforementioned logo is optional. Reaching the unorganised sector, street food sellers and kiosks would still present a socioeconomic problem since labelling requirements only apply to ready meals goods.
