Around the World - Anti-food Waste Laws: A Comparative Analysis

In recent years, the problem of food waste has been gaining global attention, both in the public and private sectors. Indiscriminate dumping of an excessive amount of waste from farms, retail stores and consumer households have turned the earth into a global “garbage dump”. Although waste disposal is typically considered as a private matter, it has public implications from the envi- ronmental, poverty, and ethical perspectives. In this paper, we examine American, Canadian, French, Italian, Chinese, Philippines and Malaysian laws on combating the problem of food waste. Finally, we make some recommendations for countries or authorities considering passing an anti-food waste law.
