BPOM modifies the maximum limit of selenium supplementation for pregnant women

Indonesia

Oct 24, 2024

The Food and Drug Authority (BPOM in Indonesian) announced at the end of August 2024, BPOM Regulation (PerBPOM) number 15 of 2024 concerning amendments to Regulation number 32 of 2022 concerning the criteria and procedures for the registration of health supplements. In principle, this PerBPOM contains provisions regarding changes to the maximum limit/day of selenium supplementation in combined form for pregnant women and nursing mothers, from the original maximum of 60 mcg/day to 65 mcg/day.

This change to the maximum limit is a follow-up to inputs submitted by the Directorate General of Public Health (Ditjen Kesmas) and the Directorate of Nutrition and Maternal and Child Health (Dit. Nutrition and KIA) of the Ministry of Health. The report Maternal Nutrition in Indonesia: Landscape Analysis and Recommendations, which can be accessed at https://www.unicef.org/indonesia/, states that the prevalence of anemia in pregnant women in Indonesia is one of the highest among low- and middle-income countries.
