MFDS the deadline for a pilot project on personal transactions of health supplements

South Korea

May 12, 2025

The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) is facing controversy as it extends the deadline for a pilot project on personal transactions of health supplements until December 31, 2025, and revises guidelines to relax regulations. Due to multiple instances of guideline violations found during the pilot project, there are suggestions that safety measures are needed to ensure the safety and quality of the products.

In particular, this guideline change eliminates quantity limits and simplifies the expiration date requirements. Previously, it was limited to a cumulative total of 10 times and 300,000 won per person, but the revised guidelines eliminate the quantity limit and limit it to a cumulative total of 10 times.

The expiration date requirement will be changed from “products with at least 6 months remaining before the expiration date” to “within the expiration date (the expiration date will be clearly posted).” Labeling requirements were also simplified from “all labels must be placed so that they are clearly visible” to “healthy functional food certification marks or healthy functional food phrases must be placed so that they are clearly visible.”
