Poland announces new alcoholic beverage labeling guidelines

Poland

Aug 28, 2024

The Polish Agency for Agriculture and Food Quality Inspection released that the amendment to food labeling regulations, which amends the rules for informing consumers of alcoholic beverages, will come into force as of August 20, 2024.

The possibility of using the term “dyeing” has not been defined so far in national or EU regulations. Poles associate “tinctures” with specific products and expect certain products to provide them with the expected experiences. The requirements to be introduced are intended to ensure that the consumer who buys the “tincture” receives a product that meets his or her expectations.

After August 20, 2024, in order to use the name “nalewka”, the product must meet the requirements for a spirit drink and may not have colorants or flavorings and no fruit juices, concentrated fruit juices or wine products may be added to it.

The maceration must be carried out for at least 15 days and the result of this maceration is that the spirit acquires the dominant flavor derived from the macerated ingredient.

Products that were marketed before the regulation came into force and that contain the term “tincture”, even if they do not meet the requirements, may be sold while stocks last.

Another change introduced by the regulation is the introduction of the obligation to indicate the actual volume of alcohol offered for sale in the restaurant trade.
