Spain applauds new EU measures to protect wines

Spain

Apr 11, 2024

On April 10th, Luis Planas, the Spanish Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food, declared that the new EU Regulation on geographical indications will give greater legal protection to Spanish wines. The Spanish viticultural sector is crucial to the country, described by Planas as being "the spearhead of the Spanish agri-food sector and the Spanish economy".

The new Regulation empowers the management of geographical indications introducing the "Recognized Producers Group", similar to the Spanish Regulatory Council, with exclusive functions on aspects such as the modification of quality specifications and the use of quality names on pre-packaged processed foods. For the first time, the protection of quality names is extended to online domain names.
