Sugar claims on alcoholic beverages under review

Australia

Jul 21, 2023

The Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) has called for comments on the proposal (P1049) to clarify the requirements for making nutrition content claims about carbohydrate and sugar on alcoholic beverages.

Standard 1.2.7 in the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code permits voluntary claims about carbohydrate content to be made on alcoholic beverages. Sugar is a component of carbohydrate, but the code lacks clarity around sugar content claims.

FSANZ has proposed amending the standard to clarify the permitted extent of carbohydrate and sugar claims on food containing more than 1.15% alcohol by volume.
