EU – USE OF PLEUROTUS ERYNGII MYCELIUM POWDER IN FOOD SUPPLEMENTS REQUIRES NOVEL FOOD AUTHORIZATION

Spain

Dec 01, 2019

The European Commission formally communicated that the use of Pleorotus eryngii dehydrated mycelium powder in food supplements and smoothies would be subject to a novel food authorization application.

The Spanish Food Safety Agency AESAN had, following a local application, made a consultation with the European Commission and other EU member states to assess the status of dehydrated mycelium powder from the fungi Pleorotus eryngii. Although the carpophore or the reproductive part of the fungi has a history of safe and significant consumption within the European Union, it was concluded not to be the case for the mycelium, the vegetative part. The statement adds that there is no established evidence of compositional equivalence between the carpophore and mycelium. None of the other member states confirmed a safe use of the substance before the threshold date 15 May 1997. Consequently, the Pleorotus eryngii dehydrated mycelium powder is considered a novel food and requires novel food authorization for use in food.
