The European Union: A Normative Paradigm against Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs)

This study presents a general approach to the current state of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in the European Union (EU), specifically the citizenry’s position in relation to this biotechnology is exposed. Subsequently, a historical retrospective of the legislation is made, with three countries as a reference: Spain (in favor of the development of GMO), France (in total opposition to this biotechnology ensuring compliance with precautionary law) and Portugal (which is declared proactive to a possible coexistence). In addition, it analyzes various resistances and their movements in action, from the general (from the Voluntary Reapers and GM-free zones) to the particular (by countries). Lastly, it discusses legal disputes and disagreements between EU member countries.
