Ministry of Health announces new regulations on food imports
Malaysia
Jul 07, 2025
The Ministry of Health is preparing to announce updates to its food regulations, which will require imported food products to be produced in factories certified by the Malaysian Ministry of Health's Food Safety Assurance Program. Importers will be required to provide proof of compliance or they could be rejected.
The key points are as follows:
1. Food factories exporting to Malaysia must be food safety certified by the Malaysian Ministry of Health's Food Safety and Quality Assurance Program.
2. The new regulations are in line with the Malaysian Food Hygiene Regulations 2009, applicable to domestic producers.
3. The certification system must cover Food Safety Management Systems (FSSM), Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) systems and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).
4. Importers must present documents proving compliance with these regulations; otherwise, they risk having their products rejected or face legal action.
5. Malaysia may conduct inspections or assessments of food establishments in exporting countries in collaboration with the competent authorities, or conduct direct inspections at food production plants.
