Dec 16, 2024

The National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA in Portuguese) announced the results of the Pesticide Residue Analysis Program in Food (PARA in Portuguese) in 2023. In this edition, 3,294 food samples were analyzed, collected in 76 municipalities.

The program evaluates the presence of pesticide residues in food and their potential risk to human health. The samples are collected from supermarket shelves in all regions of the country and analyzed in specialized laboratories using internationally recognized scientific methods.

In this edition, 14 foods were analyzed, representing 31% of the consumption of plant-based foods by the Brazilian population: pineapple, lettuce, garlic, rice, sweet potato, beet, carrot, chayote, guava, orange, mango, bell pepper, tomato and grape.

In total, the analyses looked for residues of 338 different pesticides, including products never authorized or substances already banned in Brazil.
