New  Jersey Health Committee Approves Bill limiting age for dietary supplements

USA

Oct 29, 2024

A bill (A1848) that prohibits the sale of diet pills and dietary supplements for weight loss or muscle building to those under 18 years old passed the New Jersey Assembly with a large majority on Monday (Oct. 28) -- a move the national dietary supplement lobby says unjustly overrides FDA authority as other states eye similar bills, but which children’s health advocates say fills a gap in FDA’s weak authority to regulate supplements.

According to the bill, “No person shall sell, offer to sell, or offer for promotional purposes, either directly or indirectly by an agent or employee, any over-the-counter pill or dietary supplement for muscle building to a minor under 18 years of age, unless the minor is accompanied by a parent or guardian.”
