Recommendations on the control of nickel in food

European Union

Mar 28, 2024

The Commission has published Recommendation (EU) 2024/907 of 22 March 2024 on the control of nickel in food. Taking into account the available occurrence data, maximum limits for nickel in various foods have been established in Commission Regulation (EU) 2023/915.

In order for the samples to be representative of the sampled lot and the analytical results to be reliable and comparable, Commission Regulation (EC) No. 333/2007 should be followed.

Therefore, it is recommended that Member States, in cooperation with food business operators, should monitor during the years 2025-2027 the presence of nickel in food.

In addition, Member States should, where needed, gather knowledge on mitigation measures for the reduction of nickel levels in food.
