SPAIN - FOOD SUPPLEMENTS TO OBSERVE EFSA UPPER INTAKE LEVELS

Spain

Jul 31, 2020

The Spanish Authority for Food Safety and Nutrition (AESAN) makes direct reference to the upper levels as established by the European Food Safety Authority to determine safe quantities of vitamins and minerals in food supplements. Although sensu stricto  Spanish legislation sets no maximum limits for the level of vitamins and minerals in food supplements, it must be observed that foodstuff are safe for consumption. The Upper Level relates to the highest intake amount of a certain nutrient likely to pose no risk of adverse health effects in almost all individuals. Accordingly, these amounts can be taken as a reference to determine safe amounts in food supplements taking into account the intake from other dietary sources.
