SCOTLAND - QUARANTINE MEASURES PROMPT REVISION OF VITAMIN D SUPPLEMENTATION

Scotland

Jul 02, 2020

With the extended advise to stay at home to contain the Covid-19 outbreak, the Scottish government has reconsidered the recommendations on the supplementation of vitamin D. As vitamin D is naturally synthesized with the exposure of the skin to sunlight, the advise to stay indoors may have the adverse side effect inducing vitamin D deficiencies. This especially concerns risk groups like pregnant and breastfeeding women, infants and young children and people with dark skin.

It is therefore advised to get 10-15 of unprotected sun exposure and supplement with an adequate amount for the respective age or population group
