The regulatory framework for nutraceuticals in the United States and Canada is often thought of as a dichotomy; the open market of the United States versus the premarket review of Canada. In exploring the framework under which each country regulates it becomes evident that the differences are not as stark as is often believed. The tenets of DSHEA and the Natural Health Product Regulations arose out of the same needs and are both rooted in public access to safe and high-quality products. Nutraceuticals are at a crossroads in North America, with significant regulatory changes on the horizon and a tsunami of illicit cannabidiol products forcing regulatory action. For the business professional, healthcare provider, or consumer, this chapter provides a comprehensive understanding of the current regulations and controls with a look toward the future of nutraceuticals in North America.
