Household packaging labeling regulations in effect as of January 1, 2025
Spain
Jan 06, 2025
As of January 1, 2025, all household packaging will be required to include information on the corresponding recycling container or fraction. This measure is part of Royal Decree 1055/2022, which seeks to encourage more effective recycling and pave the way for the implementation of the new European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation.
However, the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITERD in Spanish) has established a transitional period of 6 months (until July 1, 2025) for companies to adapt to the new labeling regulations. During this period, stocks of packaging and products already labeled before January 1 may be marketed.
The new regulation requires informing consumers on the labeling about the fraction or container where to deposit the packaging. In the case of multi-materials, the fractions must be indicated if they are separated, and if not, the fraction of the predominant material.
