Singapore publishes regulation for the import of insects as food

Singapore

Jul 08, 2024

Effective immediately, the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) has introduced a regulatory framework allowing the import of insects and insect products for human consumption and as animal feed.

The initiative aims to promote the insect food industry. Importers must adhere to specific guidelines outlined in SFA Circular No. 2024/07, including registration requirements for both processed food and animal feed importers. Additionally, overseas insect processing establishments must undergo registration with supporting documentation such as Food Safety Management Systems (FSMS) or Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) plans. Traders seeking clearance permits for imported insects must use designated HS and product codes as listed by SFA.
