Chile's Ministry of Health has amended Supreme Decree No. 977 of 1996, governing the Health Regulation of Foods. Effective in 24 months, the changes mandate fortifying milk, powdered milk, and flour with vitamin D3. Liquid milk must now contain 1 µg/100 ml, while powdered milk requires 10 µg/100g, which can be exceeded by up to 40%. The decree also sets minimum levels of essential nutrients in flour (the minimum amount for fortification is 2.25 µg of cholecalciferol per 100 grams of flour, which can be exceeded by up to 40%, reaching the level of 3.15 µg/100g.) Verification of fortification will be conducted at production facilities. The origin of vitamin D3 must be clearly labeled. President Gabriel Boric Font and Health Minister Ximena Aguilera Sanhueza signed the decree, ensuring compliance with updated standards.
