New regulation on substances to fortify foods

The Ministry of Health has issued a notice revising the list of substances added to fortified food, which will take effect 14 days after the date of the notice.

The new regulation includes within its scope the following:

  • Food products to which the addition of vitamins and minerals is mandatory;
  • Maximum levels of vitamins and minerals;
  • List of substances other than vitamins and minerals prohibited in the production of food products.

According to Article 2 of the Regulation, the following substances must be added to fats (except milk fats):

  • Vitamin A - so that the maximum amount in 100 g of the final product does not exceed 900 μg (3000 IU)
  • Vitamin D - so that the maximum amount in 100 g of the final product does not exceed 7.5 μg (300 IU)
  • In addition, potassium iodide or potassium iodate should be added to salt intended for direct human consumption, so that 100 g of table salt contains 2.3 (±0.77) mg of iodine.
