On the 9th of April 2024, the European Commission (EC) authorized the placing on the market of Protein concentrate from Lemna gibba and Lemna minor as a novel food.
Lemna gibba is more commonly known as duckweed and has been shown to be a promising new product in the protein transition as it does not require arable land to grow. Furthermore, duckweed produced 10 times the amount of protein per hectare than conventional soy crops.
The novel food is authorized with proprietary data protection for a period of 5 years from the 30th of April.
