New law on labeling and marketing requirements for insect-based foods

The Parliament approved Law No 411/2023 by which food products containing yellow worm meal, house cricket and migratory locust (which are authorized as novel foods under the relevant EU legislation) will be subject to the following requirements:
- Prohibition of using the new foods in the preparation and production of traditional Romanian products and traditional recipes;
- Precise indication of the legal name or currrent name or descriptive name of the authorized new food on the product labeling;
- Inclusion of an allergen warning related to the ingredient in question on the product labeling;
- Products containing insect-based ingredients will be marketed in a separate stand from conventional food products that do not contain any authorized insects.
