9 new substances authorized for use as food and as ingredients in traditional Chinese medicine

The National Health Commission has authorized 9 new substances for use as food and as ingredients in traditional Chinese medicine. The 9 new authorized food and drug substances (Codonopsis pilosula, Cistanche deserticola, Dendrobium officinale, American Ginseng, Astragalus, Ganoderma lucidum, Dog Wood, Gastrodia elata, Eucommia ulmoides) are based on the "Food Safety Law" and the "Regulation on the Management of the Catalogue of Substances that are both Food and Chinese Traditional Medicinal Ingredients". To ground this decision, full consideration was given to traditional consumption and local needs in China.

The above substances are recommended to be consumed in moderation according to the traditional way and are not recommended for special groups such as pregnant women, lactating women, infants and young children.

When they are used as raw materials for health food, they shall be managed in accordance with the relevant provisions about health food; when used as a Chinese herbal medicine, they shall be managed in accordance with the relevant provisions on Chinese herbal medicine.
