Packaging and packaging waste decree approved

The Council of Ministers has approved the Royal Decree on Packaging and Packaging Waste, a comprehensive review of Spanish Regulations in this area aligned with the objectives of the European Union and that will allow progress in the implementation of the circular economy and achieve the new packaging recycling targets for 2025 and 2030.
In addition to these objectives, this new royal decree seeks to transpose and implement the EU Directive on single-use plastic packaging; to promote prevention in the production of packaging waste and its reuse; and to achieve the targets for the separate collection of single-use plastic bottles established in the Law on Waste and Contaminated Soils for a Circular Economy and confirm compliance, with a view to the establishment of the deposit, return and refund system (DRS).
