The battle over our bellies: what makes nutrition regulation difficult for Americans to swallow?

The question we should be asking is why regulation of nutrition has not effectively been spearheaded by government policy in the same way as other public health and safety issues. n Section II, the author will present the Nutritional Facts regarding the health and financial factors that contribute to the obesity epidemic before identifying who is Picking up the Tab as long as obesity goes untreated. Finally, the author will assess the current state of regulatory efforts to address the obesity epidemic with a critique of Locally Grown successes and failures.

In Section III, the author will sample the Recipes for legal approaches previously taken to pass various major public health and welfare legislation. Comparisons will be drawn between efforts to regulate nutrition and the recipes for successful public health and welfare legislation to determine whether any of them can be applied to tackle obesity in the United States. Seasoning them with six “prevention and control strategies” for government regulatory power over harmful products “related to chronic conditions,” 12 the author will analyze which flavors complement nutrition regulation and which ones leave a bad taste in Americans’ mouths.
