Mandatory declaration of origin on labeling for products from Israeli-occupied territories

Spain

Oct 17, 2024

The Ministry of Social Rights, Consumption and Agenda 2030, has informed companies importing food into Spain from Israeli-occupied territories that they must clearly indicate this origin on their labels. This decision seeks to ensure that consumers have access to truthful information about the origin of products, especially given the complex situation in the Middle East.

Minister Bustinduy explained that, according to international law, the Golan Heights and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, are not part of Israeli territory. Therefore, labeling products from these areas as 'product of Israel' is incorrect and misleading. Instead, labels should include terms such as 'Israeli settlement' in parentheses, for example, 'product of Golan Heights (Israeli settlement)'.

In addition, the minister stressed that products from Palestine that do not come from Israeli settlements should carry a clear and non-misleading indication of their geographic origin, in accordance with international practice.
