New amendment to infant formula regulations

Australia

Sep 12, 2024

The Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) announces that it has amended (P1028 - Infant Formula) Standard 2.9.1 on infant formula (for use from birth), follow-on formula (for use from 6 to 12 months) and special medical use products for infants (for use under medical supervision) in the Australian and New Zealand Food Standards Code.

The proposal was intended to ensure that the regulation of infant formula products remains safe and appropriate. Infant formula must be safe for consumption by formula-fed infants, and caregivers must know how to prepare, use and store the product safely.

The revised regulation for infant formula products came into force on September 13, 2024 and applies only in Australia. New Zealand has opted out of this regulation under Annex D of the Agreement between the Government of Australia and the Government of New Zealand on a Joint Food Standards System.
