New Austrian nutritional guidelines recommend more plant-based foods

The Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety in collaboration with the Austrian Nutrition Society and the National Nutrition Commission have published updated Austrian nutritional recommendations. The Austrian nutritional recommendations are the so-called Food-Based Dietary Guides (FBDG), which represent the optimal composition of a healthy diet based on food groups. The current version, presented in the form of a food pyramid, takes into account evidence-based recommendations for nutrient intake and findings on diet-related disease prevention.

In the nutritional recommendations, legumes and their products form for the first time a separate category: the experts recommend three servings per week for carnivores and four servings per week for vegetarians. Consumption of meat, fish, milk and dairy products should be reduced.

The new “model plate” shows the optimal composition of a meal. It shows the recommended proportion of different foods at a glance and now complements the food pyramid. The new Austrian food pyramids will be published in autumn 2024. For the first time, there will be recommendations for vegetarian diets in addition to the omnivorous food pyramid.
