The Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) Board has approved proposed amendments to the regulatory standards governing infant formula products in the region. The changes, under Proposal P1028, aim to enhance safety and clarity for consumers. These amendments, endorsed on June 4, 2024, are now under consideration by food ministers from both countries, with a final decision expected by late August 2024.
The revisions include updates to definitions, nutrient compositions, and labeling requirements across five standards and eight schedules within the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code. A transition period of five years will accompany these changes, ensuring compliance and allowing for the continued sale of existing products. FSANZ emphasizes these updates are crucial for safeguarding public health while reflecting current scientific knowledge and market developments.
