Health Canada extends the use of nisin to egg-white wraps

Canada

Jun 03, 2024

Health Canada has updated its "List of permitted food additives" to allow the use of nisin in egg-white wraps, with a maximum level of 20 parts per million (ppm).

Nisin was already permitted in various egg-based products including liquid whole egg, liquid whole egg mix, and baking mixes containing egg, but not in egg-white wraps. Following a safety and efficacy assessment, the Food and Nutrition Directorate has found nisin safe for this new application.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency will enforce this modification. Inquiries and new scientific information on nisin can be submitted to Health Canada's Food and Nutrition Directorate.
