India
Apr 05, 2023
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) published Draft FSS (Foods for Infant Nutrition) Amendment Regulations, 2023. This draft describes in detail the regulations to be followed by different categories of infant foods.
Although each category of Infant Food has different specifications, some generalised requirements are applied to almost all of them. These requirements should be followed by manufacturers of food for infant nutrition to get approval from the FSSAI. The generalized requirements for ease of understanding have been listed in the new regulations as following:
- Foods for infant nutrition shall be packed in hermetically sealed, clean, and sound containers or in flexible pack made from paper, polymer, and/or metallic film as per the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging & Labelling) Regulations, 2011, so as to protect the contents from deterioration. It shall be packed in an inert atmosphere.
- The category ‘infant formula for special medical purposes’ provided under these regulations shall be exempted from provisions specified under Regulation 2.4 of the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging and Labelling) Regulations, 2011. Further, a warning shall be declared on the label if any ingredients with known allergenicity are present.
