European Union
Jun 14, 2024
Member States have endorsed the European Commission's proposal to ban Bisphenol A (BPA) in food contact materials, aiming to protect public health and ensure food safety. The European Food Safety Authority's (EFSA) assessment highlighted BPA's potential harmful effects on the immune system. The ban targets BPA in packaging like metal can coatings and consumer articles such as reusable plastic drink bottles and kitchenware. Following a scrutiny period by the European Parliament and the Council, the ban will be adopted and take effect at the end of 2024. Exceptions will apply where no safe alternatives exist, allowing industry transition periods.
