The development of techniques such as genome editing and synthetic biology has opened the door to a range of innovation in food and agricultural products in a manner beneficial to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) targeting food security, sustainable consumption, and combatting climate change. Regulatory authorities in the United States, Canada, and the European Union are in the process of considering their oversight of such products, and each has taken certain steps to clarify expectations. Importantly, each jurisdiction approaches such innovations from within its own existing regulatory framework. Thus, while there is some overlap between the three in risk identification and requirement for market access, the three are sufficiently distinct and it remains necessary to stay apprised of developments in each jurisdiction
