Qualified health claims for magnesium and reduced risk of high blood pressure

USA

Jan 10, 2022

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced in a letter of enforcement discretion that it does not intend to object to the use of certain qualified health claims regarding the consumption of magnesium and a reduced risk of high blood pressure (hypertension), provided that the claims are appropriately worded to avoid misleading consumers and other factors for the use of the claim are met.

The FDA responded to a health claim petition submitted on behalf of The Center for Magnesium Education and Research, LLC. The petition requested that the FDA authorize a health claim about the relationship between the consumption of magnesium and a reduced risk of high blood pressure. A health claim characterizes the relationship between a substance and a disease or health-related condition.
