ASA weighs in on health-boosting claim about superfoods

UK

Sep 27, 2024

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has upheld complaints against Huel Ltd  regarding misleading advertisements for their product, Daily Greens.

A post on Huel’s own Instagram account, seen on 3 April 2024, featured a video of Julian Hearn, company founder, speaking about their Daily Greens product. The accompanying caption stated “Superfoods to supercharge your health. Huel Daily Greens is packed with […] gut-friendly probiotics. All the nutrients your body needs to thrive; Reduce tiredness and fatigue with 26 essential vitamins & minerals like iron; Excellent source of biotin and collagen to support smooth, healthy skin”.

ASA has ruled that the advertisement must not appear again in the complained-of form. We asked Huel Ltd to ensure that future marketing communications did not make unpermitted comparative nutritional claims and, where permitted claims were used, only foods in the same category were compared. We asked them to ensure that they did not make comparative price claims, in the absence of adequate justification. We also asked Huel to ensure that future marketing communications did not contain general health claims unaccompanied by specific authorised health claims such that, if reformulated, the specific health claims in their advertisements would convey the same meaning as the authorised claim.
