France allows the term ‘probiotic’ on food supplements labels

France's General Directorate for Competition, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Prevention (DGCCRF), part of its Ministry of the Economy, has announced that the term “probiotic” will be allowed on the labels of food supplements in the country. Certain conditions must be met :
- Probiotic strains must have a history of consumption
- The term may be used on food supplement labels together with the wording "contributes to the balance of the intestinal flora".
- Dietary supplements using the claim must also provide a minimum of 107 to 109 live cells of a strain per day to consumers.
