The main goal of the implementation of the Health Claims Regulation was to create a Europe-wide harmonised framework to protect consumers from unsubstantiated and unauthorized health claims made on foods. An evaluation by the EU Commission clearly shows, that consumer protection is still close to zero since the evaluation of health claims for botanicals in food has been suspended until this day. The introduction of traditional health claims cannot be the solution but will endanger the future of traditional herbal medicinal products. Existing legislation must be enforced.
