On the 10th of July, the Chamber of Deputies of Brazil voted in favor of the proposals for surcharges on processed foods and beverages, including a selective tax (IS in Portuguese).

The tax is intended to discourage the consumption of products considered "harmful to health and the environment". According to the current draft regulation, the IS covers sugar-sweetened beverages and alcoholic beverages.
