New draft on standards for the production of organic sea salt and other organic food salts

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food has published the draft Royal Decree establishing the detailed rules for the production of organic sea salt and other organic salts for food and feed.
Since there are no detailed rules at European level for the production of organic sea salt and other organic salts, and taking into account that Spain is a large salt producing country, as well as organic production, it is necessary to specify the methods that can be used to produce organic sea salt and other organic salts for food and feed in accordance with Regulation (EU) 2018/848.
If this national standard is not established, organic salt produced according to the general stipulations of Regulation (EU) 2018/848 could be certified, and on the basis of private standards that, lacking a common nexus in terms of production detail,
would generate certified productions with a high degree of heterogeneity, both in production and in the degree of requirement of its control, being that degree of requirement the cornerstone of the organic production system, and generating distortions in competition, both in the domestic market, as in the Community.
