Ireland publishes a report on safety of “probiotics” in food supplements

On Monday, July 8, 2024, the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) released a pivotal report addressing the safety of "probiotics" in food supplements.

Defined by the FAO/WHO as live microorganisms conferring health benefits when consumed adequately, probiotics lack specific legal criteria under current EU law, barring their use as health claims on product labels. The FSAI report highlighted minimal adverse incidents tied to probiotics. The Committee proposed stringent safety assessment standards and evidence requirements for supplement producers.
